We laughed not only because running was the main event, but also because we know Audrey truly enjoyed the whole experience with Girls on the Run.
Audrey, Michael and I decided to take a year off from competition dance and instead try a different activity; we wanted something that instills confidence and encourages personal growth. We chose Girls on the Run.
For three months, Audrey met with her school team two days a week. She came home disappointed after her second day because she was the slowest runner of the group. We talked with her about setting – and beating – personal goals rather than comparing herself to others. I was certain our advice fell on deaf ears, but Audrey was soon happily reporting her progress each week. The grand finale of GOTR is a 5k race; each girl chooses a running buddy. Audrey asked Abby, a high school senior who is beautiful inside and out. She was the girls’ nanny last summer and now has a bond with them that we hope lasts a lifetime.
As for Audrey and running…she intends to do GOTR in the Spring, too. We’ll just need to remind her that it involves running.
(BTW, yes, she’s wearing a cape)
